Sweden to Deploy LVKV 90 Anti-Aircraft Systems in Latvia to Counter Drones

In 2026, Sweden will deploy LVKV 90 cannon anti-aircraft systems to strengthen air defense on NATO’s eastern flank.

The Swedish Ministry of Defense announced this.

The deployed systems are due to arrive in Latvia in 2026 and will form the basis of Sweden’s contribution to strengthening NATO’s air defense.

Their deployment will take place as part of Sweden’s participation in strengthening NATO’s defense capabilities on the eastern flank, in which Sweden will deploy a battalion reinforced with LVKV 90 air defense systems.

These anti-aircraft systems are developed on the basis of Swedish CV90 infantry fighting vehicles and have similar weapons – 40-mm Bofors cannons. The main difference between these vehicles is the presence of a turret-mounted PS-95 radar station that provides 360° airspace monitoring. Additionally, the system’s ammunition includes special Bofors 3P shells.

BAE Systems/Bofors developed these shells. The basic concept is a universal munition that, thanks to a programmable fuze, can operate in multiple modes and effectively engage a range of targets: UAVs, helicopters, personnel, lightly armored vehicles, and watercraft.

Militarnyi previously reported that the new Loke system, which Saab and the Swedish Air Force presented in Liutyi 2025, was deployed during the Swedish Air Force’s participation in NATO operations at the Malbork air base (Poland) between April and September 2025.
