The Iranian capital Tehran, home to around 10 million people and one of the biggest cities in the Middle East, has seen a mass exodus as the conflict with Israel intensifies. The city’s bustling downtown began to empty, with many shops closed and the historic Grand Bazaar shuttered. A partial evacuation order from the Israeli military was issued to 330,000 people living in the centre of Tehran early on Monday. However, many had already begun to flee following attacks at the weekend.
Traffic jams stretched for kilometres on roads leading out of the city, with many heading toward the Caspian Sea region. Iranians complained in interviews about the slow, sparse provision of safety protocols and instructions from the government. These Iranians contrasted the government’s relative silence on safety measures with its frequent use of text messages to admonish women over insufficiently modest attire. To fill the vacuum, Iranians were turning to social media, friends and family, and foreign-based news outlets for information.
Recall, intense Israeli airstrikes targeted Iran’s capital after US President Donald Trump demanded ”unconditional surrender.” İn this case heavy traffic could be seen from Tehran. Tens of thousands of people began leaving the city. Iranian media reported that there were congestion and fuel restrictions on the roads leading from Tehran to the northern provinces . Oil Minister Mohammad Paknejad said that these restrictions were only a precautionary measure and that there would be no problem in providing fuel to the public.
The possibility of Washington’s direct involvement in the war has sent shockwaves through global markets . Israel’s main goal is to destroy Iran’s nuclear program. However, due to the location of the Fordo nuclear facility under a mountain, it can only be hit with special US-made bombs.
A source close to the internal discussions said Trump and his team are already considering a number of scenarios, including joint strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities . Trump spoke with Netanyahu by phone on Tuesday and held a 90-minute National Security Council meeting the same day.Trump made a series of statements on his "Truth Social" account: “We know exactly where the Supreme Leader is hiding. We will not kill him… for now. But our patience is running out.” Three minutes later, he posted: “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!”. Iran has responded by saying that if the United States joins the war, American military bases in the Middle East will be immediately targeted . US intelligence reports that Iran has activated some ballistic missile installations, but it is not yet known whether these installations will target US forces or Israel.
