The Israel Defense Forces said the engagement occurred during ongoing combat operations against Iran, with the Israeli F-35I “Adir” intercepting and destroying an Iranian Air Force Yak-130, according to the military and reporting cited by the defense outlet Defence Blog. Israeli officials described the event as the first fighter-to-fighter aerial engagement of the current Israel-Iran war.
The IDF did not disclose the exact location of the encounter but confirmed the Iranian aircraft was destroyed during an operational mission. The downed aircraft was a Russian-made Yak-130, a jet typically used for advanced pilot training but also capable of performing light combat missions.
The engagement comes as both sides increasingly rely on combat aviation following several days of strikes targeting air bases, aircraft, and other military infrastructure. Israeli forces have carried out repeated air operations aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities, while Iran has begun flying patrol missions intended to defend its airspace. Earlier in the week, observers reported Yak-130 aircraft operating over Tehran, flying alongside MiG-29 fighter interceptors in patrol missions intended to detect and intercept aerial threats.
The Yak-130s involved in those patrols were reportedly armed with short-range air-to-air missiles and tasked with engaging aerial targets such as drones operating at medium and low altitudes.
Iran’s decision to deploy the aircraft in air defense roles followed earlier Israeli strikes targeting Iranian combat aviation. Israeli military statements said that Iranian fighter jets were struck on the ground shortly before takeoff during an earlier phase of the campaign, part of a broader effort to limit Tehran’s ability to deploy its air force. The Yak-130 itself was developed by Russia’s Yakovlev design bureau as an advanced jet trainer designed to prepare pilots for modern combat aircraft such as the Su-30, Su-35, and Su-57.
Although primarily a training platform, the aircraft can also operate as a light attack jet, equipped with multiple external hardpoints capable of carrying guided bombs, rockets, and short-range air-to-air missiles.
These capabilities allow the aircraft to perform missions including close air support, limited air defense, and counter-drone operations. The Israeli aircraft involved in the interception was the F-35I “Adir,” Israel’s customized version of the F-35 stealth fighter. Based on the F-35A platform, the Adir incorporates Israeli-developed avionics, electronic warfare systems, and communication technologies tailored to Israel’s operational requirements. Israel operates one of the largest F-35 fleets outside the United States.
In this case the United Kingdom is enhancing its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean in response to escalating tensions and the increasing threat of drones and missiles in the region. The UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed the deployment of the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon and Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters, reinforcing the UK’s air defense and counter-drone capabilities. This deployment follows a series of defensive operations by UK forces. RAF F-35B jets shot down drones over Jordan, marking the first time an RAF F-35 has destroyed a target during operational duty.
