At one time, Russia’s infiltration tactics became a problem for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, particularly due to a lack of personnel to create a solid defensive line. However, Ukrainian soldiers managed to counter this. This was stated by military observer Denis Popovich on Radio NV , explaining why Russia is losing momentum on the front.
"The Russians, in the face of the formation of kill zones, have developed an infiltration tactic. Let me remind you, this involves individual infantry groups, many of them, simply marching on foot from point A to point B. Using drones, they plot this route, accumulate, and then begin to consolidate their positions at these points B behind our battle lines, creating a problem. In other words, they effectively create the threat of encirclement and penetration into areas where no one expects them," Popovich said.
He added that the most striking example of such a successful Russian operation is the so-called Dobropolye salient, which the Russians managed to create in August of last year. "To combat this tactic, firstly, we need more drones. Secondly, disabling Starlink was a big help, as Starlinks were often used to control these small infantry groups," Popovich added.
He noted that the front no longer has the same line of combat engagement as in previous wars. In fact, we’re talking about intermingled positions and zones of mutual infiltration.
"And in such conditions, it’s very difficult to move forward, since drones monitor everything, track everything, and destroy troop concentrations. And because of this, the front is effectively at a standstill. And as of now, it’s impossible to say that the Russian Federation has made any progress in the spring phase of its offensive, which has been ongoing for three years," Popovich noted.

Meanwhile, media reports indicate that the Defense Forces continue to hold Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. However, according to them, the situation in Myrnohrad could force the Defense Forces to organize a controlled withdrawal from that town. According to the source, Russian troops are considering Pokrovsk as a personnel accumulation area and are moving reserves there.
"For the enemy, Pokrovsk is currently serving as a manpower storage area; they’re amassing additional reserves there. For the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the objective is to maintain a positional defense; no one is planning to withdraw from there yet," the source noted. According to the source, Ukrainian units are present in Myrnohrad, but the situation there is more tense:
"The situation there is much more complicated, so a controlled withdrawal may take place."
The source also notes that the intensity of hostilities remains high, particularly even during the so-called "ceasefire" of May 9-11. At the same time, he said, Russian forces have reduced the number of guided bombs they use compared to last year, but aviation remains a key pressure factor.
"Overall, the intensity of artillery exchanges has decreased somewhat these days. But the enemy’s air force plays a key role, and they’re really bothering us in this regard," the source noted. The source also emphasized that logistics, particularly the evacuation of the wounded, remains one of the main challenges facing Ukrainian units in the Pokrovsk area.
"The NRC is helping, and sometimes we have to come up with complex plans to evacuate the wounded," the source explained.
