Pokrovsk has become a symbol of a new phase in the Russian-Ukrainian war – an urban standoff without delineated lines, where small groups of saboteurs infiltrate the city, disguise themselves as civilians or Ukrainian soldiers, and selectively erode defenses. Ukrainian units live in a fog of suspicion and risk, where friend and foe can be just steps away, writes The Telegraph. "We drove right past them," says Ivan, a 21-year-old machine gunner with the Da Vinci Wolves unmanned aerial vehicle unit, recalling the moment the saboteurs posed as Ukrainian fighters. Such situations in Pokrovsk are no longer an exception, but a normal course of events. Analysts note that the Russian army has transitioned to a "democracy" model of warfare. Instead of large offensive columns, which can easily be destroyed by drones, the Russians are advancing in groups of three to five. "The front lines are blurring," explains Finnish analyst Emil Kastehjelmi. Russian reconnaissance drones are searching for holes in Ukrainian defenses. Due to a lack of personnel and constant aerial surveillance, these gaps are inevitable. Russian groups are entering the city on bicycles, motorcycles, civilian trucks, or even on foot, using fog and rain as cover. In the city, it’s virtually impossible to distinguish enemy from friendly forces. That’s why Ukrainian fighters have revived the long-standing tactic of using test words that are difficult for Russians to pronounce. One of the key ones is "palyanytsya." But even this does not always help. Ukrainian troops risk opening fire on civilians or their own units. One commander recalls an incident where soldiers were forbidden to fire on an infantry fighting vehicle because it was "one of our own." It was later revealed that the vehicle was Russian, and it was destroyed by a drone only after further investigation. In another episode, a Ukrainian brigade mistakenly destroyed its own Termit ground drones. Drones have become a key weapon in the city: they detect saboteurs and strike their hideouts. Therefore, Russian groups are the first to attempt to reach the positions of Ukrainian operators—and kill them. "Our second echelon isn’t working, but it’s responsible for 90% of the strikes," the military says. Without these strikes, it’s harder for the Ukrainians to destroy reconnaissance groups approaching the city. According to Deep State, Russia already controls at least half of Pokrovsk, with the remaining territories remaining a gray zone. Not a single district is fully under Ukrainian control. President Zelensky estimated the number of enemy saboteurs in the city at 300, but the military believes the actual figure is higher.
