A torrential rainstorm battered the coastal city of Qinzhou in southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from Monday, inundating streets and disrupting traffic, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Tuesday. According to Associated Press the sudden downpour starting in the early hours of Monday quickly triggered widespread waterlogging across downtown areas and adjacent neighborhoods. As of 4 p.m Monday, the total rainfall in Qinzhou reached 416.9 millimeters, with the extreme hourly rainfall peaking at 143.3 millimeters in Jiulong Town, Qinnan district, according to the local meteorological bureau cited by CCTV. As shown in CCTV footage, scores of vehicles were stuck in heavily flooded areas, while traffic police were deployed to guide congested traffic. Local authorities activated a Level III emergency response on Monday morning. According to the local firefighter department, over a hundred rescuers have been dispatched to assist with the evacuation. No casualties have been reported so far. Forecasters warned that heavy rainfall would persist through Tuesday in the eastern and southern parts of Guangxi province, including Qinzhou, accompanied by severe convective weather such as brief thunderstorms and gale-force winds.
