The situation in Sumy and Kursk regions has now been partially stabilized. In particular, the settlement of Andreevka has already been liberated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and another one will be de-occupied in the near future. This was stated by the new commander of the Airborne Assault Troops, Hero of Ukraine Oleh Apostol in an interview with Telegraf.
According to him, active work is currently underway in these areas.
Telegraf clarified that after the recording of this interview, military units and divisions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces liberated the village of Kondratyevka. "We are constantly working not only on the quantitative component, but also on qualitative growth. For example, we have changed the principle of firing and have good results. There are some other technological innovations, but I will not disclose them to the enemy. We understand that the occupiers will study this interview in detail," Apostol emphasized.
He added that he is currently preparing two surprises for the Russian army, he already has everything for one of them, and for the other he needs resources and time, but it is planned to be implemented very soon.
"If everything works out, it will be very difficult for the enemy. This concerns both the technological and engineering improvement of our positions. We will create such kill zones for the Russians that they will die in droves. If they get there, today’s losses will seem minimal to them," the Air Assault Forces commander announced. When Apostol was asked whether there was a threat of Russian occupation for Sumy or encirclement of the city, he answered:
"The Ukrainian Defense Forces must be prepared for all scenarios. An escalation in the Sumy direction is one of them. Active work is currently underway to build fortifications. As we have already said, the situation directly on the contact line is now partially under control. Can the enemy transfer more reserves and intensify the offensive here? Certainly."
The commander emphasized that as of the end of July there is no direct threat to Sumy, except for shelling. If the situation worsens, the civilian population will receive all the necessary information to carry out the evacuation.
"But the Defense Forces in general, and the Air Assault Forces in particular, are doing everything to hold the enemy as far away as possible and push them back to the border. We can look at the example of Pokrovsk, where active fighting began a year ago, and immediately there were predictions from armchair "experts" about the rapid occupation of the city. However, the situation was leveled and the city was held. Pokrovsk remains under the control of Ukraine, despite the deterioration of the situation. But a whole year has passed, and we understand at what cost this may happen. This is a war, and there is dynamics here," Apostol warned.
The Airborne Assault Commander concluded that Ukraine underestimated the thesis "if you want peace, prepare for war" after gaining independence, but over the past 10-11 years this lesson should have been learned.
"We must constantly invest in the construction and development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so that at a critical moment you can count on them. And not wait until the enemy is a kilometer away from you, and only then think about some fortifications and protection," the Hero of Ukraine believes.
