Ukrainian forces destroyed one of Russia’s advanced new hypersonic missiles by striking it on the ground at a military base in Russia, top Kyiv officials claimed Friday. According to Associated Press the Oreshnik missile, which can fly at 10 times the speed of sound and has been touted by Russian President Vladimir Putin as invulnerable to air defense systems and a game-changing weapon, was hit at the Kapustin Yar military firing range near the Caspian Sea in southwestern Russia, roughly 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the head of Ukraine’s Security Service, Vasyl Maliuk, told reporters in Kyiv. Maliuk made the announcement alongside other top officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He described the mission as "very successful." It is not clear how many Oreshnik missiles Russia has but Putin says they are currently in production. It wasn’t possible to independently verify his claims and Russian officials didn’t immediately comment. Ukraine also conducted 20 strikes on Russian oil facilities, Maliuk said. He claimed that the strikes had brought a 20% drop in oil products on Russia’s domestic market and temporarily halted the operation of 37% of Russia’s oil refining capacity. Zelenskyy also said that that the situation in the eastern city of Pokrovsk was "difficult." On Wednesday, Putin claimed that Russian troops had surrounded Ukrainian forces in the city. Ukrainian military officials vigorously denied the claim. "All of their forces are there. You know that around 170,000 enemy personnel are concentrated in that direction," Zelenskyy said. "There are Russians in Pokrovsk. They are being destroyed—gradually destroyed—because, well, we need to preserve our personnel," he added.
