Ukraine has launched a drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, damaging a frigate that carries Kalibr missiles, Ukrainian media reported. The attack was launched by the Security Service of Ukraine, known as SBU, jointly with Ukraine’s Defense Forces. The hit frigate, Admiral Essen, carries eight Kalibr cruise missiles. The strike hit the ship’s central superstructure. According to the reports, the air defense system surrounding Novorossiysk Bay and the port was breached. A fire on the deck lasted about 18 hours, indicating serious internal damage. In addition to mechanical damage, the ship’s electronic systems were also affected. Among them is the TK-25 electronic warfare system, responsible for detecting emissions and deploying active countermeasures; MR-90 Orekh radars, which guide surface-to-air missiles to their targets; Frigate-M2M surveillance radar, responsible for long-range detection of air and surface objects. Used by the Russian army for strikes against land and naval targets, Kalibr missile is launched from ships, submarines, as well as some ground platforms. Open-source intelligence analysts say that besides the frigate, a Molniya-class missile boat was also struck. According to the reports, drones hit the aft portion of the vessel, which contains the main engines, diesel generators, and the engine room—components that power the boat’s propulsion system. This rear section also includes two AK-630M 30 mm gun mounts used for the boat’s close-range defense, along with diesel generators that provide electrical power to the ship’s onboard systems.
