Ukrainian drones carried out a large-scale attack on Russian military facilities in occupied Crimea and several locations inside Russia during the night of May 17. According to reports circulated by the Crimean Telegram outlet, Ukrainian forces targeted a major Russian hub used for storing and launching tactical missiles and attack drones on the Arabat Spit in Crimea. Former resort facilities near the village of Schastlivtsevo, being used for military purposes, were seen burning after the strike, according to the report. Video footage shared in social media features precision strikes on Russian facilities. The drones have reportedly used aviation missiles during these attacks. Russian-installed authorities in Crimea dismissed circulating footage of the attack, claiming the videos were allegedly generated using artificial intelligence. Explosions were also reported overnight near the Belbek military airfield in Crimea. Thermal imaging data reportedly indicated fires or damage in areas where fighter jets were stationed. Repeated strikes also targeted the strategic communication hub of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in the settlement of Myrnyi in Crimea. Meanwhile, in the Melitopol area, a major 330-kilovolt electrical substation known as PS-330 “Melitopol” was reportedly hit in southeastern Zaporizhzhia region. According to local reports, the scale of the fire and thermal signatures suggested significant damage to the facility. Meanwhile, Major Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces are using unguided rocket projectiles launched from long-range drones capable of striking targets at operational depths of up to 500 kilometers. NURS are unguided rocket munitions typically used by helicopters and ground-attack aircraft against surface targets. However, the combination of a “kamikaze drone + eight unguided rockets” creates entirely new capabilities for effectively striking enemy targets in areas beyond the reach of conventional aviation.
