Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Russian capital Moscow, and a number of Russian regions and cities, including Yaroslav, Rostov-on-Don, Groznyy on May 8. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a total of 264 UAVs were allegedly downed over various Russian regions. The attack in Moscow prompted Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency announce flight restrictions at Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports. Later, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that 26 drones had been shot down overnight while approaching Moscow. Explosions were also reported in the Russian city of Yaroslavl, followed by a fire at the territory of an oil refinery on May 8. According to preliminary information, the target was the Yaroslavnefteorgsintez oil refinery. A fire reportedly broke out on the plant’s territory. Videos circulating online show smoke rising above the refinery. Rostov-on-Don was also targeted by Ukrainian drones. Preliminary reports suggest that the Agropromzapchast plant may have come under a missile attack. Local residents reported a series of explosions followed by a major fire at the site. Rostov Region Governor Yury Slyusar stated that the region had “repelled a UAV and missile attack.” “There are no casualties. However, unfortunately, there has been damage on the ground. As a result of falling UAV debris, destruction has been recorded in the cities of Taganrog, Bataysk, Rostov-on-Don, and in the Myasnikovsky district,” the official said. Ukrainian drones also attacked the Chechen capital, Grozny, on the morning of May 8. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the Chechen opposition Telegram channel NIYSO and Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Serhii Sternenko. Footage from the drone strikes in Grozny has already appeared online. “Greetings to Kadyrov are being delivered by Ukrainian drones currently attacking Grozny,” Sternenko said, referring to Ramzan Kadyrov. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia had violated the ceasefire regime declared by Ukraine starting May 6. He later promised a “mirror response.” On May 4, Zelenskyy announced the introduction of ceasefire which was supposed to begin at midnight on May 6. Russia did not respond to the proposal and continued military operations and shelling of Ukraine. Prior to that, on May 4, the Russian Ministry of Defense unilaterally announced a “ceasefire” for May 8–9 and threatened to launch a massive missile strike on central Kyiv if the May 9 parade in Moscow was disrupted.
