Ukraine has used drones to strike oil tankers from Russia’s " shadow fleet " four times in recent weeks , escalating the war at sea and demonstrating that Ukrainian security services are growing confident in carrying out brazen attacks and publicly admitting responsibility for them.
One vessel was hit by aerial drones on Thursday night in the Mediterranean Sea, more than 1,900 kilometers from Ukraine. Three others were attacked by naval drones in the Black Sea. These are the first attacks on Russian oil tankers in violation of sanctions, which Ukraine has acknowledged since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, The New York Times reports .
The SBU also stated that it had attacked Russian oil platforms in the Caspian Sea four times over the past 10 days. The oil business fuels Russia’s economy and the war, and throughout the conflict the West has tried to cut off that revenue through sanctions.
To circumvent these sanctions, Russia has created a so-called "shadow fleet" – a clandestine network of hundreds of oil and gas tankers with untraceable owners that covertly transport fuel to countries like India and China. Ukraine believes that if it can disrupt this business by attacking the shadow fleet and refineries, it will gain leverage in the peace talks that US President Donald Trump is currently pushing, demonstrating its continued attack on Russia.
Ukraine also hopes to force Russia to the negotiating table by cutting its oil revenues. So far, Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin has given no indication that he is interested in ending the war. He claims victory, recently adding that Kyiv’s attacks on the shadow fleet will supposedly have no effect. He also threatened retaliation. "We will definitely respond," he said during his final press conference. The media reports that the recent attacks are part of a new front in the conflict. For years, the Biden administration has warned Ukraine against attacking Russia’s oil industry due to concerns about rising global prices and escalating the war.
It is also reported that Ukraine’s public statements suggest that Trump may have known about these plans, as Ukraine would not risk angering Trump at this stage of negotiations.
All four tankers disabled by Ukrainian security services were empty. The SBU reported that three of the vessels in the Black Sea were en route to load oil in Novorossiysk, Russia’s busiest port on the sea’s northeastern coast. The attack on Thursday night in the Mediterranean was the most unexpected, as the vessel was located very far from Ukraine.
Experts said the attacks were a signal from Russia that Ukraine was prepared to escalate the war, and a message to Europe that it needed to enforce sanctions or face major problems on its shipping routes. The attacks led to a sharp rise in insurance rates for all legal tankers in the region. They also raised concerns in countries like Turkey about the war spreading to nearby waters and raised concerns about potential environmental damage.
