Ukraine is reportedly considering or has possibly set up a military foothold in Libya as part of efforts to target Russian vessels operating in the Mediterranean, local media reported. This allows Kyiv to influence the situation in the Mediterranean Sea and pose a threat to Russian ships moving towards the Suez Canal. According to the report, more than 200 Ukrainian personnel are stationed across three sites, including an airbase in Misrata and another location near Mellitah. The report further alleges that Ukrainian forces have already carried out two strikes against Russian ships in the region – specifically the gas carrier Arctic Metagaz and the tanker Qendil. It also suggests that a formal agreement permitting a Ukrainian military presence in Libya could be finalized by October last year. Separately, the Arctic Metagaz remains adrift in the Mediterranean without its crew. Efforts to tow the damaged vessel to a Libyan port were unsuccessful due to severe weather. The incident occurred in waters between Malta and Libya, where a fire broke out onboard, forcing the crew to evacuate. The ship sustained significant damage and has since been left drifting. Russian officials have suggested the fire may have resulted from an attack by Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles, though this claim has not been independently verified. In response to recent strikes on its oil infrastructure, Russia has once again imposed a ban on gasoline exports. According to sources cited by the French outlet, Radio France Internationale, there have already been two incidents involving Russian ships in the Mediterranean. One reportedly took place in early March, when a liquefied natural gas tanker sustained damage, while an earlier case in December 2025 involved an attack on a crude oil tanker. In both instances, the strikes were allegedly carried out using naval drones launched from locations within Libya. Previously, Moscow had accused the authorities in Tripoli of backing Ukraine and working in tandem with Western intelligence agencies. Within Libya, the situation has also sparked unease, with some political figures warning that an expanding foreign military presence could undermine national sovereignty and potentially trigger broader geopolitical tensions.
