Ukrainian engineers are developing drones which can replicate the battlefield impact of the U.S-supplied HIMARS or High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to hit Russian targets, it has been reported.
Ukrainska Pravda and its defense news affiliate Oboronka reported that Kyiv is drawing on the midrange unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in response to Russia’s countermeasures against HIMARS rockets which renders them less effective.
In an article for the Ukrainian news outlet, open-source intelligence analyst Illia Bolharyn wrote Ukraine had been forced to produce other ways to attack Russian forces at the same distance and accuracy as the American systems by using drones which can cause the "HIMARS effect", Newsweek says. U.S.-supplied HIMARS have been a cornerstone of Ukraine’s long-range strike capability, since Kyiv received its first system in June 2022 and has since taken delivery of at least 38 others, although this figure could be higher.
Mounted on trucks, the highly mobile systems can strike targets up to 80 miles away, and have proved effective in hitting Russian logistical hubs, command posts and ammunition depots. While Russian countermeasures are reducing their effectiveness, developments in domestic drone technology in Ukraine could fill the gap. Faced with Russian HIMARS countermeasures and ammunition shortages, Ukrainian weapons engineers are working on midrange drones that could be controlled over tens or even hundreds of miles and can carry warheads weighing up to 220 pounds, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
A mass deployment of these drones could partly replicate the HIMARS effect in striking Russian command posts, logistics and equipment.
Ukraine’s drone sector has experienced rapid growth and since last year, especially in midrange UAVs, which sit between a short-range FPV drone and a long-range drone capable of hitting targets hundreds of miles away.
Furthermore, Ukrainian cruise missile Flamingo, now being produced by the company Fire Point, outperforms the American Tomahawk on some measures. It exceeds the Tomahawk in range and warhead size, The Independent reports.
The Flamingo, with a stated range of 3,000 kilometers and a warhead of more than one ton, is one of Ukraine’s newest weapons. It uses a Soviet turboprop engine and can fly at about 900 kilometers per hour.
Although the missile combines old Soviet technology with modern developments, it costs roughly the same as the American Tomahawk. It nevertheless outperforms the Tomahawk on range and warhead weight: 3,000 km versus 1,500 km, and 1,100 kg versus 500 kg. Another advantage is that these missiles are controlled exclusively by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Allies cannot limit their use against targets deep inside Russia, as the US did with ATACMS and France and Britain did with Storm Shadow.
"In contrast, Kyiv can fire the Flamingo at any target it wants. It is not restricted by what Ukraine’s ‘allies’ say it can and cannot do when fighting Russia’s invading forces," The Independent writes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine now produces more than 60% of its long-range weapons domestically. Fire Point representatives say the missile may not meet some standards, but no one cares.
