Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday announced that Ukraine and Russia had completed the first phase of a large-scale prisoner swap under the “1,000 for 1,000” agreement. According to Zelenskyy, 205 Ukrainian citizens have returned home as part of the initial exchange. The group includes members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service who had been held in Russian captivity. He noted that many of the released service members had been imprisoned since 2022. Among those freed were defenders of Mariupol as well as troops who had fought in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kyiv regions. Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude to everyone involved in securing the prisoners’ release. He specifically thanked Ukrainian soldiers contributing to the exchange process, the negotiating team coordinating the operation, and international partners assisting efforts to bring Ukrainian captives back home. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War stated that among those freed was a member of the National Guard who had been taken captive at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Officials said the youngest released service member is 21 years old, while the oldest is 62. According to the headquarters, the returning defenders will be transferred to medical facilities where they will undergo comprehensive health evaluations, receive any required treatment, and begin rehabilitation programs. Authorities also noted that the former prisoners will be given official documents, financial compensation, and additional support services upon their return. Ukraine and Russia have carried out numerous prisoner exchanges since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
