Ukraine successfully brought home 193 prisoners of war on Friday in the latest exchange with Russia. This marked the 73rd prisoner exchange since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The released POWs include members of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, the National Police, and the State Special Transport Service. They defended Ukraine across various front-line sectors. Among the returned prisoners of war are soldiers against whom Russia had opened criminal cases, as well as wounded defenders. The youngest released defender is 24 years old, while the oldest is 60. As part of the prisoner exchange, Russia also secured the return of its 193 servicemen. Announcing the secure of prisoners of war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy thanked those involved in making these exchanges possible, including every military unit on the front line that helps replenish Ukraine’s exchange fund, as well as Kyiv’s partners. “We remember every single person and continue working every day to bring our people home from Russian captivity,” Zelenskiy stressed. According to Ukrainian officials, a significant number of the freed prisoners had been unlawfully detained in Russia’s Chechnya region, where several were reportedly prosecuted under false charges—actions that breach the Geneva Conventions. The group of returnees also included injured service members recovering from wounds, and a number of officers who were among those released. The latest round of prisoner exchange between Russian and Ukraine was held on April 11, and resulted in the release of 175 prisoner of war from both sides.
