The advance of Russian troops in the border area of Sumy Oblast has been stopped as of this week, and the line of combat contact has been stabilized.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Sirsky, reported this on his Facebook page , emphasizing that the defense of Sumy region is one of the main tasks for today, and spoke about a day of intense work in the Severo-Slobozhansky direction.
"Based on the results of May-June, we can state that the wave of attempts at a "summer offensive" by the enemy from the territory of the Russian Federation is fizzling out this year, just as last year’s attempt at offensive actions by the enemy in the Kharkiv region did. However, our previously adopted decisions are already yielding results. The advance of Russian troops in the border area of Sumy region has been stopped as of this week, and the line of combat contact has been stabilized," he said.
Syrsky added that in certain areas our units are successfully using active defense tactics and liberating Ukrainian land in the Sumy region border area.
"In the Severoslobozhansk and Kursk directions, we have again tied down about 50 thousand personnel of the Russian Armed Forces, in particular the elite brigades of their airborne forces and marines," the Commander-in-Chief said.
In addition, our offensive actions in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region forced the enemy to send a certain part of the troops to defend its territory. "This significantly reduced the offensive capabilities of the main group of enemy troops in the Sumy direction," Syrsky explained.
He also reported that a special group on defense of Sumy region – cities and communities of the region – was created in the command of our group in the Severo-Slobozhansky direction. The primary tasks are to strengthen fortifications, build up the system of engineering and fortification barriers.
An official was also appointed who will be directly responsible for preparing cities and communities of Sumy region for defense and ensuring the effectiveness of the system of engineering barriers in the likely directions of the enemy’s attack. A deputy for engineering fortification equipment was appointed.
"I analyzed the real state of affairs directly in the fields and forests – I inspected the direction of fortifications, including the part for which the OVA and DSST are responsible. The work continues, but it should be accelerated, taking into account the requirements of modern warfare," Sirsky noted.
The Commander-in-Chief added that the construction of additional fortifications, the organization of "kill zones," the construction of anti-drone corridors to protect our soldiers and ensure reliable logistics for our troops are "obvious tasks that are being carried out, but the efficiency of such tasks must become significantly greater."
"I checked my watches" with the commanders and soldiers on the ground in Sumy region and at the brigade command posts. I am grateful for all the thoughts and suggestions. I gave the necessary orders on organizational issues and provision of units," he said.
