Ukrainian army has started using upgraded An-28 aircraft as airborne launch platforms for interceptor drones aimed at destroying Russian Shaheed assault drones, according to newly surfaced footage. The aircraft is being used to deploy P1-SUN interceptor drones produced by the Ukrainian company SkyFall. Footage shared by operator aero.tim on social media shows the An-28 fitted with external hardpoints beneath its wings, apparently capable of carrying as many as six interceptor drones in total. After a Russian drone is detected, the interceptor drones are launched midair and guided toward the target using onboard camera systems similar to FPV drone controls. The intercept is completed by direct impact detonation against the incoming drone. The airborne launch concept is designed to provide a lower-cost alternative to traditional air-to-air missiles. By deploying interceptors from aircraft instead of ground-based positions, operators can reduce response times, improve pursuit capability, and adapt more effectively to constantly changing Russian drone flight routes. Ukraine has also tested additional interceptor drone systems during training missions, including US-made Merops drones currently undergoing trials in the country. The An-28’s use in anti-drone missions first became public in February after a television crew from French broadcaster TF1 joined a Ukrainian crew aboard an An-28 aircraft equipped with M134 miniguns during a mission to track Russian drones. According to the report, the nighttime sorties involved a four-man civilian volunteer team working alongside the military to intercept drones once they had been detected in the air. Ground operators reportedly guided the aircraft toward suspected drone activity zones, while the onboard crew searched for targets visually in low-light conditions. Although there have been isolated reports of Russian Shahed drones being modified with improvised anti-aircraft weapons , including Soviet-era R-60 air-to-air missiles recovered from downed drones and sightings of portable air-defense launchers attached to them, such modifications do not appear to be part of large-scale production. The adaptation of the An-28 reflects Ukraine’s broader effort to create affordable defenses against waves of inexpensive kamikaze drones. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly highlighted the huge cost imbalance between relatively cheap Shahed-type drones, estimated at roughly $20,000 each, and advanced interceptor systems such as MIM-104 Patriot missiles, which can cost millions of dollars per launch. As a result, Kyiv has pushed for expanded production of low-cost interceptor drones, including the OCTOPUS system developed in cooperation with the United Kingdom.
