Ukraine’s medium-range drone strikes are hindering Russian forces’ progress on the battlefield. According to The Independent, citing Ukrainian officials, by striking Russian air defense systems and logistics facilities located dozens of kilometers behind the front line, the Defense Forces are disrupting the advance of Russian troops. It is noted that in recent months, Ukraine has been devoting increasing resources to strikes on Russian territory. These strikes typically take place at distances of 30 to 180 kilometers from the front line. Sources told reporters that this allowed Ukraine to strike Russian radars, air defense systems, communications infrastructure, rear facilities, and large military equipment deep into Russian territory. Commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces Robert (Madyar) Brovdi told reporters that long-range drones can now more easily penetrate enemy defenses and strike Russian oil facilities located far behind the front lines. "At present, medium-range strikes play a decisive role," he emphasized. The publication noted that over the past few months, Ukrainian strikes have caused the most significant damage to Russian oil infrastructure since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Analysts reported that Russia cut oil production in April due to drone attacks on ports and refineries, and crude oil shipments through Russia’s only remaining pipeline to Europe were suspended. These attacks also boosted morale in Ukraine after a harsh winter. The field commander of the 7th Battalion of the 414th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade, call sign Kusto, stated that Ukraine’s capabilities for carrying out medium-range strikes have increased significantly since the fall. "We’ve expanded our scale, increased the number of operators, and expanded the number of systems we use. We’ve also increased the variety of platforms available," he told reporters. Cousteau noted that his unit was primarily focused on targets located up to 100 kilometers from the line of contact. According to him, Russian air defense systems are the most important targets. "The aircraft itself typically flies about 150 kilometers from the launch point and then begins searching for targets in a designated area," he added in a conversation with reporters. The commander told reporters that his unit most often uses Ukrainian medium-range drones, such as the Chaklun-V, for strikes. According to Brovdi, manual control ensures greater precision, and that no more than three drones are typically used for each confirmed kill. He told reporters that this year, his forces have destroyed at least 129 air defense systems in Russian-occupied territories. In these circumstances, Putin’s army is fleeing from some positions on the frontline. In addition, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that in April, Ukrainian troops carried out more than 160 medium-range strikes at a distance of 120–150 km. The publication noted that the Institute for the Study of War previously reported that Russian troop advances on the battlefield have slowed since October. Analysts believe this is due, in part, to Ukraine’s medium-range strikes. Expert Emil Kastehjelmi of the Finnish conflict analysis group Black Bird noted in a conversation with reporters that medium-range strikes may not turn the tide of the war, but they represent a challenge to which Russian forces must adapt.
