Russia is expanding its aircraft plant in Kazan, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported, citing an analysis of satellite images. Large production buildings have been built on the plant’s premises. The largest one occupies about 19,000 square meters — comparable to three football fields.
The Kremlin allocated about 1 billion euros from the state budget to modernize the plant, but due to sanctions and a shortage of labor, production is facing serious difficulties and is lagging behind schedule.
The Kazan plant produces and modernizes Tu-22M3 and Tu-160M bombers, as well as the new Tu-160M2. It is the only enterprise in Russia that is potentially capable of replacing strategic bombers damaged or destroyed as a result of the special operation Spider’s Web carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine. However, in 2024, only two Tu-160M2 and two Tu-160M were produced there. Kazan also produces Tu-204 civilian aircraft.
Less than a month after Operation Spider’s Web, on the night of June 27, the Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked the Marinovka airfield in the Volgograd region, about 350 km from the Ukrainian border. As a result, two Su-34s were destroyed and two more were damaged. One such fighter-bomber costs about $50 million.
"The Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine used long-range drones to target Russian fighters. The attacks also caused a fire in the technical and operational part of the enemy airfield, which is a critical infrastructure of the military facility. This is where the enemy prepares aircraft for flights, carries out their ongoing maintenance and repair work," the SBU said in a statement. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have managed to destroy or damage about 30 of these machines. At the same time, their serial production continues at the Novosibirsk Aviation Plant. According to estimates by the Defence24 portal , Russia received a total of 24 combat aircraft in 2024, including ten Su-34s. According to media reports, Russia has purchased Western aircraft components worth at least €1 billion in recent years in circumvention of sanctions. However, organizing such supplies is becoming more and more difficult and expensive every year. It is also problematic to acquire equipment for their production. Sanctions against Russia must be destructive, insists Kyiv, only then will the aggressor country be forced to negotiate an end to the war against Ukraine.
