Ukrainian forces have liberated nine settlements and destroyed 2,653 Russian troops in the direction of Oleksandrivka in eastern Donetsk region over the past two months, Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces Command revealed on Thursday. Ukraine began a counteroffensive at the end of January in the Oleksandrivka direction, a strategically important area in the southeast where the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions meet. As a result of the operation, Ukrainian troops recaptured roughly 440 square kilometers of territory. This included the liberation of seven settlements in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and two more in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. In addition, three other settlements were cleared of Russian forces, although their exact locations were not made public. According to Ukrainian military command, Russian losses in this sector since the launch of the offensive on January 29 have been substantial, totaling 3,676 personnel. Of these, 2,653 were reported killed, 1,023 wounded, and 11 taken prisoner. These developments come amid indications that Ukraine is improving its overall position on the battlefield. Kyiv reported that in February its forces regained more territory than they lost for the first time in several years, disrupting Russia’s anticipated March offensive. Despite this, Russian troops continue to press forward along multiple stretches of the front line. Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that between March 17 and 20, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault involving tens of thousands of troops, with over 6,000 casualties reported. He noted that the heaviest fighting occurred in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Pokrovsk sector of Donetsk Oblast and around Oleksandrivka. Syrskyi also indicated that Moscow is attempting to reinforce its positions with fresh units and is relying on deteriorating weather conditions to reduce the effectiveness of Ukraine’s aerial surveillance, drone operations, and artillery fire. Situation in Donetsk, remains one of the most intense and contested along the frontline, with continuous fighting reported across multiple directions. Russian forces are maintaining pressure in key sectors, particularly around Pokrovsk, Avdiivka’s wider area, and toward logistical hubs that are critical for Ukraine’s defensive lines. Assaults are often carried out in waves, involving large numbers of troops, armored vehicles, and artillery support, but gains have generally been slow and costly.
