A gasoline shortage has emerged in Russia amid ongoing Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries, The Moscow Times reports .
It is reported that during exchange trading on May 8, Russian sellers sold 32.64 thousand tons of gasoline, which is 5.9% less than the previous trading day.
Sales of AI-92 gasoline fell by 8.9% to 20,340 tons, while AI-95 gasoline increased by 1.5% to 12,240 tons. According to one Russian expert, a shortage of AI-95 gasoline has already formed on the market ahead of the peak season. According to him, in the summer, demand for this type of fuel grows faster than for AI-92, since during the holiday season, consumers use cars designed specifically for 95-octane gasoline.
The publication’s source cites unscheduled maintenance at major refineries and reduced petroleum product production as the cause of the shortage. In this situation, oil companies are directing resources to supplying their own distribution networks.
Andrey Dyachenko, an analyst at the Russian company Proleum, pointed to a shortage of AI-95 gasoline on the exchange market. He estimates that primary refining is significantly lower than planned. Today, Russian oil companies are forced to choose which gasoline grades to maintain production.
At the same time, the expert considers the situation "far from critical." He estimates that the actual volume of fuel at gas stations is currently 7-10% lower than last year’s level, and existing reserves and capacity are still sufficient to cover final demand.
Experts estimate that repairs at Russian refineries could take more than a month, and shipment times in early May have already increased by an average of two to four weeks. According to one source, this situation is preventing market participants from building long-term reserves, increasing the risk of fuel shortages this summer.
It’s worth noting that stock exchange prices in Russia remain relatively stable. Following trading on May 8, the price of AI-92 gasoline, based on the European Russian Federation index, rose by 0.01% to 65,990 rubles per ton, while AI-95 increased by 0.16% to 71,890 rublesper ton. İn recent months, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have stepped up attacks on Russian oil refineries. Thus, on the night of May 5, Ukrainian drones struck three key crude oil processing units at the Kirishi refinery, as well as a fuel tank at a nearby oil pumping station. The latter transports crude oil and petroleum products to the Baltic port of Primorsk.
Media previously reported that the restoration of the Tuapse oil refinery could cost the Kremlin approximately $5 billion . Overall, the series of Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure in late March and early April resulted in Russia losing approximately $2.2 billion in lost revenue.
