War without infantry: Ukrainian robots independently take Russians prisoner

A Ukrainian company developing ground combat robots admitted it didn’t expect to see Russian troops surrender to their machines right on the battlefield. These unmanned ground vehicles or UGVs are increasingly being used by Ukraine on the front lines for cargo delivery, evacuation of the wounded, assaults, mine laying, fire support, and even the capture of enemy positions. Now, another function has been added to this list: accepting the surrender of Russian soldiers, Business Insider reports .

DevDroid’s Director of Research and Development, Oleg Fedorishin, said he was surprised to see reports that Russian military personnel had surrendered to one of the company’s robots.

"Of course, I was a little surprised," he admitted. According to Fedorishin, using robots in such situations significantly reduces the risks for Ukrainian troops. He noted that a soldier who formally surrenders may open fire or detonate a grenade at the last moment—such incidents have been recorded in Ukraine before.

"If a robot comes in instead of fighters, then in the worst case they will simply destroy a piece of metal – and that’s it," the developer explained.

One of the most famous cases occurred in January, when DevDroid published a video featuring the TW-7.62 robotic platform. The footage shows three Russian soldiers walking with their hands raised, then lying down on command.

At the time, the company stated that the operation was carried out "without risk to our soldiers," and this is exactly what modern warfare looks like today. Fedorishin added that this was not an isolated incident.

"This is not the only incident," he noted.

Ukrainian units typically don’t disclose full details of their operations to manufacturers. The developer speculates that Ukrainian troops were likely nearby, with aerial drones overseeing the mission. However, it was the ground-based robot that minimized the threat to personnel.

Recently, two Russian soldiers, hands in the air, surrendering and carefully following the orders barked at them by the other side.

Except in this case, there were no human captors in sight. Instead, the two Russians were submitting to Ukrainian land robots and drones controlled by a pilot from the safety of a position miles away from the front line. This is the future of warfare – and it’s happening now. “The position was taken without a single shot being fired,” Mykola “Makar” Zinkevych, the commander of the Ukrainian unit that conducted the mission, told CNN.

Zinkevych, who serves in the “NC13” unit of Ukraine’s Third Separate Assault Brigade, handling ground-based, robotic strike systems, said the operation last summer was the first time in history that an enemy position was stormed and prisoners taken by ground robots and drones without the involvement of infantry. It’s a claim that’s hard to corroborate, but it underscores Kyiv’s pride in its technology.

Since then, missions in which robots replace human soldiers have become the unit’s daily bread and butter.

The skies above the front lines in Ukraine have been swarming with drones for years now, posing a grave threat to infantry. As a result, Ukrainians started to experiment with land drones – remotely controlled vehicles that run on wheels or tracks – and ground robotic systems. They were originally used mostly to evacuate casualties and resupply troops, but increasingly also to conduct combat assault missions.
