Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces have targeted and damaged a key cluster of Russian military facilities linked to drone development in occupied territory. Fighters from the Raid regiment conducted strikes against a site belonging to the Russian “Bars-Sarmat” Special Purpose Center, located in parts of the Zaporizhzhia region under Russian control along the Sea of Azov coast. The operation successfully hit multiple elements of the complex, including a temporary troop deployment area as well as workshops where Russian forces were allegedly assembling, modifying, and outfitting unmanned aerial systems, ground robotics, and electronic warfare equipment. Video shared in social media captures the strikes. The “Bars-Sarmat” formation is described as a volunteer-based unit with capabilities approaching brigade level. It operates within Russia’s Unmanned Systems Forces and is considered a significant structure for experimenting with and field-testing drone technologies, robotic combat systems, electronic warfare and signals intelligence tools, and associated command-and-control infrastructure. Ukrainian sources characterize the unit as one of the more advanced and high-risk components of Russia’s drone warfare ecosystem, noting that it blends military personnel, engineering teams, and industrial-style production capabilities within a single operational framework.
The center was established in 2024 under Russia’s broader “BARS” reserve program, designed to quietly mobilize trained specialists in advance of and during the wider war against Ukraine. Rather than relying solely on conventional conscripts, the structure is said to include professionals such as engineers, programmers, and technical experts focused on developing military technologies. Its leadership is attributed to Dmitry Rogozin, previously head of Roscosmos and later described as a political figure linked to the occupied Zaporizhzhia region. Raid regiment officials stated that the strike is expected to degrade the unit’s ability to advance and deploy technologies that enhance Russian battlefield capabilities.
