Explosions were heard in the town of Volgorechensk in Russia’s Kostroma Oblast overnight following a drone strike on the Kostroma Power Station, the third largest thermal power station in Russia.

Astra Telegram channel reported this. According to the independent Russian outlet, drones attacked the Kostroma Power Station on the night of 5-6 November. Residents of Volgorechensk reported several powerful explosions and a fiery glow above the plant. Photos and videos posted on social media confirm strikes near the facility.

Kostroma Oblast Governor Sergei Sitnikov claimed that Russian air defence forces had "repelled a drone attack". He added that the explosions had caused "damage to energy infrastructure facilities", but said that electricity supply in the oblast "was not disrupted".

The Kostroma Power Station is located on the right bank of the Volga River in the town of Volgorechensk, about 350 kilometres from Moscow. Its total installed capacity is around 3,600 MW, making it one of the key plants in Russia’s energy system.

The facility consists of several power units ranging from 300 to 1,200 megawatts and its chimney, over 320 metres tall, is among the highest in Europe.

It is noted that Ukraine’s military struck and damaged Russia’s Volgograd oil refinery overnight on Nov. 6, Russian Telegram media channels reported, as explosions rocked several Russian energy sites.

Local residents reported the damage, posting photos and videos on social media documenting the reported work of air defense in the region. While no fire was immediately observed, scenes of large-scale flashes were observed in the night sky towards the direction of the oil refinery.

A residential building and several homes were damaged in the attack, Volgograd Oblast Governor Andrey Bocharov reported, adding that one person was killed.

"A civilian, a 48-year-old man, died as a result of shrapnel from the shelling," he said in a post to Telegram.

Bocharov confirmed a fire broke out in an industrial zone of Vologograd Oblast’s Krasnoarmeysky district.

Volgograd is located about 354 kilometers from Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia and approximately 500 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory near Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast.

The reports come amid a wider drone attack on Volgograd Oblast, local officials reported.

The refinery, operated by Lukoil and located approximately 450 kilometers from the front line, plays a key role in supplying fuel to the Russian military.

The facility has been previously targeted by Ukrainian attacks and, on at least one occasion, has been forced to halt production.

In occupied Crimea, a Russian oil depot was struck in Bitumne near Simferopol, the Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported.
