During the night of February 11, Russia’s Volgograd region came under a drone attack. As a result of strikes by Ukrainian kamikaze drones, an explosion and fire broke out at an oil refinery owned by the company Lukoil. Regional Governor Andrey Bocharov later confirmed that a fire had occurred at the oil refinery located in the southern part of the city. Residents of Volgograd also reported hearing numerous explosions.
The governor stated that air defense systems had destroyed several unmanned aerial vehicles that were attacking energy and civilian infrastructure facilities in the region. However, he admitted that some of the drones caused damage to civilian infrastructure, including the oil refinery. According to preliminary information, there were no injuries.
According to an analysis conducted by the ASTRA Telegram channels, the strike hit the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka plant located in the Krasnoarmeysky district of Volgograd, causing a fire. Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka LLC is the largest oil refining enterprise in the Volgograd region and one of Lukoil’s key assets. The facility processes more than 15 million tons of oil per year. The plant specializes in deep oil refining and the production of gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, and other petroleum products.
The refinery has previously been targeted multiple times in drone attacks. This marks at least the ninth attack against the facility since the start of the full-scale war. The most recent such attack occurred in November last year. According to Russia’s Ministry of Defense, 108 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were destroyed across the country overnight. In addition to the Volgograd region, drone attacks targeted the Rostov, Saratov, Astrakhan, Bryansk, Kursk, Tula, Belgorod, and Voronezh regions, as well as the republics of Kalmykia, Tatarstan, and North Ossetia, Crimea, and the waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
