Ukrainian forces are making advances along the Pokrovsk axis in eastern Donetsk region that has been the focal point of hostilities. According to the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, ISW, heavy combat is ongoing in embattled Pokrovsk, with Ukrainian units not only repelling Russian assaults but are also pushing ahead. Geolocated footage dated April 7 indicates Ukrainian gains east of Molodetske, located southwest of Pokrovsk. Ukrainian troops also carried out offensive actions against Russian forces in the village of Hryshyne, northwest of Pokrovsk, as noted by ISW. Additional geolocated videos released on April 8 show Ukrainian forces targeting a Russian soldier in Hryshyne after Russian troops attempted to move into the settlement.Meanwhile, Russian forces launched attacks across multiple sectors around Pokrovsk: directly near the city; to the northwest near Hryshyne and toward Novoleksandrivka; to the north around Rodynske and Biletske; to the east near Myrnohrad; to the southwest in the areas of Udachne and Kotlyne; and to the west in the direction of Serhiivka. Russian sources themselves acknowledged Ukrainian counterattacks near Hryshyne and Molodetske, southwest of Pokrovsk. At the same time, Russian troops are reportedly reinforcing their presence in the Pokrovsk direction by increasing long-range artillery deployments and sending in additional assault units in an effort to intensify pressure on Ukrainian defenses. According to earlier reports, the Kremlin remains intent on fully capturing the Donetsk region. One of its immediate objectives appears to be establishing full control over Hryshyne, where Russian forces aim to create a foothold for further operations. Russian forces are also reinforcing Pokrovsk sector by deploying more long- range artillery systems and additional assault groups, aiming to increase the intensity of operations and wear down Ukrainian defenses. The broader objective appears to remain the full occupation of the Donetsk region, with particular focus on securing control over settlements like Hryshyne, which could serve as a staging area for further advances. It should be noted that conflicting narratives continue to surround the situation in Pokrovsk, particularly regarding Russian claims of capturing or nearing control of the city. Russian sources have periodically asserted that their forces have achieved significant breakthroughs in the area or are on the verge of taking Pokrovsk, presenting these developments as part of a broader push to secure the entire Donetsk region. These claims are often tied to reports of advances in nearby settlements and intensified offensive operations along multiple areas around the city. Ukrainian officials and military sources, however, firmly reject assertions that Pokrovsk has been captured or encircled.
