Ukrainian drones successfully struck the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich on Monday despite air defence missiles fired from the ship, Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Robert “Madyar” Brovdi revealed. The targeted frigate had earlier been used in Russian attacks on Ukraine’s. Brovdi said that air defense missile launches were carried out directly from the frigate during the approach to the target, which did not prevent the strike. In his words, Russian troops tried to repel the attacking drones with the ship’s onboard air defenses, but the effort failed to stop the Ukrainian strike.. The attack was organized by Ukraine’s Security Service, known as SBU and executed by the 1st Independent Unmanned Systems Center. It involved the deployment of FP-2 strike drones, which were designed and produced by the Ukrainian firm Fire Point. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed by Ukrainian intelligence. The struck warship is a Project 11356R multipurpose frigate used by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The Admiral Grigorovich, the flagship of its class, is built to carry out anti-submarine warfare, air defense operations, and strikes using Kalibr cruise missiles. It can carry up to eight Kalibr missiles and is fitted with a Shtil-1 air defense system loaded with 24 missiles. A video captured by drones and published after the attack, running for over two minutes, seemingly shows the strike hitting the frigate, along with both initial and follow-up damage to the Syvash platform. However, Kyiv Post has not been able to independently confirm when or where the footage was recorded. During the same mission, Ukrainian forces also hit the Sivash offshore drilling platform. This attack was carried out by the 413th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment “Raid” in coordination with Ukraine’s Naval Forces and long-range strike units. The operation followed reports of a major drone assault on Novorossiysk late on April 5, with local accounts suggesting that port facilities, including the Sheskharis oil terminal, were likely impacted. Novorossiysk is a crucial logistics center for Russia on the Black Sea and hosts parts of its naval fleet. Since 2022, it has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian long-range and maritime drone strikes. From late Sunday into Monday, Ukraine’s long-range drone units launched a large-scale overnight strike on Russia’s biggest crude-loading facility on the Black Sea, situated in the port of Novorossiysk. The attack ignited massive fires that could be seen from afar—and even detected from space—and reportedly brought oil export operations to a complete standstill. The main objective was the Sheskharis oil terminal, a vital hub for shipping Urals, Siberian Light, and Kazakh crude. In peacetime, the port typically managed about 25–35% of Russia’s crude exports, equal to roughly 3 to 3.2 million tons per month, and even amid the war it is believed to handle around one-fifth of total exports. This latest operation, said to involve more than 50 drones, appears to be Ukraine’s most extensive and destructive strike yet against Novorossiysk’s oil infrastructure. Earlier confirmed attacks on the port took place on November 14 and 29, February 7, and March 1.
