According to information published by the Irish publication The Journal, four unidentified drones were spotted heading towards Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plane as he departed Ireland.
The publication reports that four "military drones" appeared in the area of Dublin Airport, when the plane carrying the Ukrainian president was expected to fly over. However, thanks to an earlier landing, the plane safely avoided these drones.
The article notes that Irish security services concluded that the drones were large, expensive, and intended for military use. The incident was classified as a possible hybrid attack.
Irish government sources confirmed that such an incident did take place, but the Irish Armed Forces declined to comment on the information that initially appeared in the media.
Zelenskyy’s advisor, Dmytro Lytvyn , also confirmed the drone reports . "The host country is responsible for security," he told Ukrainian journalists. "According to their information, there were indeed such drones, but this did not impact the visit or force any changes."
Meanwhile, the Irish Times newspaper, citing sources, reports that the Irish warship LÉ William Butler Yeats has discovered five drones "flying near the route of Zelensky’s plane."
"Their discovery caused widespread alarm among security services amid fears that it was an attempt to interfere with the plane’s route," the newspaper writes.
A no-fly zone was imposed over Dublin when the presidential plane landed.
According to media reports, authorities do not yet know the exact origin of the drones, where exactly they took off from, or where they are now.
"Their range and the time they could remain in the air suggest that they were sophisticated drones and were operated by experienced pilots," the Irish Times wrote, citing its sources.
According to the Journal, the drones may have taken off from an area northeast of Dublin, possibly near the Howth Head Peninsula on the northern side of Dublin Bay. Authorities are investigating possible launch sites, including land-based aircraft, or an as-yet-unidentified vessel.
The drones were flying with their lights on and appeared to be "looking to be seen," sources told the Irish Times.
After flying near the expected route of Zelenskyy’s plane, the drones then headed toward an Irish warship sent to the Irish Sea in connection with the Ukrainian president’s visit, local media report.
The Journal also claims that the Irish military decided not to shoot down the drones because they lacked effective countermeasures. The publication notes that the warships had no air defenses other than machine guns, and the police anti-drone devices did not have sufficient range.
In recent months, authorities in several European countries have reported the appearance of drones over their airports and military bases. The most recent such incident occurred in the Netherlands on November 22, when unknown drones were spotted over the Volkel military base near the German border.
