An unexpected conflict has erupted within the pro-Kremlin camp in Russia following restrictions on Telegram. The decision to slow down the messaging app, attributed to actions by Roskomnadzor, sparked a sharp reaction even among those most loyal to the Kremlin. Bloomberg reports this information in a new article about the blocking of the messenger in Russia. Criticism was voiced not only by Z-bloggers and war correspondents , but also by prominent media figures. For example, Vladimir Solovyov publicly complained about a decline in subscribers and audience reach. He claimed that the restrictions had deprived him of some viewers, while the authorities had not offered any full-fledged alternative to Telegram. For many propagandists, this platform had become their primary communication channel. Discontent was even voiced in the State Duma. Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov spoke of an attempt to "shut people up," while A Just Russia leader Sergei Mironov sharply criticized those he believed were interfering with the messenger’s operation. However, parliament did support expanding the powers to block communications by decision of Vladimir Putin . Only the New People faction voted against it. Even Ekaterina Mizulina , known for her hardline stance on internet control, stated that she does not support Telegram’s restrictions. Her post, which alluded to the symbolism of the date—Safer Internet Day—was particularly noteworthy. The agency notes that this is the first such noticeable split among pro-Kremlin propagandists. According to Bloomberg analysts, Telegram has effectively replaced traditional media for politically active audiences and a significant portion of the Russian elite. And amid the restrictions, downloads of apps that allow users to bypass the block without a VPN have risen sharply.
The Telegram channel "Baza " reported that Russia will begin completely blocking this social network starting April 1. Roskomnadzor has neither confirmed nor denied this . According to Baza’s sources, Telegram will no longer operate across Russia via mobile internet and Wi-Fi.
"The agency has nothing to add to the previously published information on this matter," Roskomnadzor said.
The agency stepped up its measures to slow down Telegram on February 10. According to Kommersant, the service’s domain request processing time doubled. The regulator promised to continue the restrictions if the company fails to locate its servers in Russia and "fails to comply with Russian law." Telegram founder Pavel Durov wrote that Russia is restricting access to Telegram in an attempt to force its citizens to switch to a state-run app designed for surveillance and political censorship. “Eight years ago, Iran tried the same strategy – and failed. It banned Telegram under fabricated pretexts, trying to force people to switch to a state-run alternative. Despite the ban, most Iranians still use Telegram and prefer it to apps that are under surveillance,” Durov wrote on his channel.
