US President Donald Trump has drawn fierce backlash from both US lawmakers and international observers over his profanity-filled warning to Iran. In his Easter remarks on Sunday, Trump threatened potential attacks on infrastructure such as power plants and bridges if Tehran fails to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial passage for global energy transport—during the ongoing conflict. “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!” Trump wrote. The message used highly charged religious language and imposed a firm deadline of Tuesday. The stark warning rapidly became a focal point of political debate in Washington, where opponents cautioned that the aggressive tone might further inflame tensions and fuel new fears that the United States could be implying strikes on civilian targets. Condemning Trump, Senator Patty Murray wrote on X: “This is a deeply unwell man on a dangerous power trip, threatening possible war crimes. This is not how the President of the United States should be speaking about sending our service members into harm’s way. Republicans should join Democrats to end this war immediately.” X. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, also took to condemning Trump’s recent post, accusing the US leader of “ranting like an unhinged madman on social media”. Schumer warned Trump was “threatening possible war crimes and alienating allies.” Senator Bernie Sanders, described Trump’s remarks as ravings of a dangerous and mentally unbalanced individual. Mary Trump, who has long been estranged from Trump, commented: “The real issue isn’t just that Donald sent such a terrible message – it’s that no one seemed able to prevent him from doing so, or even believed they ought to.” Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, issued a blunt reply, calling it a threat of war crimes and describing the remark as reckless, uninformed, and deeply embarrassing. Similarly, Yassamin Ansari echoed concerns about presidential fitness, arguing that the 25th Amendment was designed for precisely this kind of scenario. She characterized the president as dangerously unstable and said he poses a serious threat to both U.S. national security and global stability. Chris Murphy wrote on X that, if he were serving in Trump’s Cabinet, he would be spending Easter consulting constitutional attorneys about the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment. He described the situation as entirely unhinged, arguing that Trump’s actions have already resulted in thousands of deaths and warning that many more could follow. Trump’s inflammatory remarks were made against a backdrop of already rising tensions in the region and came shortly after a widely publicized U.S. operation to extract an American service member from inside Iranian territory.
