The fire started around 5 p.m. local time while the ship was near the White Beach naval base in Uruma, Okinawa.

The US Navy and Japan Self-Defense Forces worked together to put out the fire.

Footage from Japanese television showed tugboats using water cannons to douse the bow of the vessel.

The US 7th Fleet confirmed the incident to USNI News.

“This afternoon, August 20th, crews responded to a fire aboard the U.S. Navy ship USS New Orleans (LPD-18) near Okinawa, Japan,” the Navy said in a statement. “We will provide more details as they become available.”

The fire has since been extinguished. The cause, as well as any injuries or damage, has not yet been disclosed.
