As reported recently, head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, demanded that the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation bring the former commander of military groups in Chechnya, Colonel-General Vladimir Shamanov, to a military tribunal for cruelty towards the Chechen people. This demand was directly related to the initiative to rename cities in Chechnya, and Shamanov’s views on this matter were sharply criticized by Kadyrov.
According to "Grozny TV," Kadyrov called General Shamanov "a vile, despicable person" and said that he was cruel to the Chechen people during the Chechen War, taking men to the field and shooting them. Kadyrov’s statements even emphasized criticism of Shamanov’s claim that he is a "patriot." On his official Telegram page, Kadyrov also made sharp appeals to Shamanov, inviting him to participate in military operations and serve the Motherland. In his conclusion, he said: "We know very well about your ‘rich experience’ in humiliating civilians. You have no moral right to sit in the Duma and claim to be a "defender of the people…" You must kneel and apologize to the Chechen people for the killing of civilians, the looting and destruction!"
Kadyrov’s statement is directly related to the draft law in the State Duma on changing names in Chechnya, which he criticized as "the destruction of historical names." Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee, Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov, expressed his position against this initiative. As a reminder, Vladimir Shamanov held military command in Chechnya from 1996 to 1999, during which he made important strategic decisions for the Russian army. Having received the title of Hero of Russia in 1999, Shamanov defined important and complex relations between Russia and Chechnya through his military service and their work. This time, Krasnodar City Duma deputy Sergey Klimov openly addressed Kadyrov, harshly criticizing him for his insulting remarks against General Shamanov. The deputy said in a statement posted on social media:
"It’s very strange that the leader of the republic that receives the most subsidies sees everything as a blessing for himself! National relations in the country are already quite tense, and such internal provocations only inflame the situation. But we will not let the Hero of Russia be insulted!"
Klimov considered Kadyrov’s calls to "apologize to the Chechen people" unacceptable and accused him of fomenting ethnic conflict within the country.
This is not the first time the Krasnodar MP has criticized Kadyrov. He previously demanded that the Chechen leader apologize for an insult he made to the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin.
Experts believe that Klimov’s speech indicates that the long-standing secret discontent between the Moscow elite and Grozny has entered an open phase. Kadyrov’s statements are already increasing national tensions in Russian society.
