In this episode of Anatomy of Disinformation, we explore how power today is no longer just about information, but about shaping perception. From Mexico to Europe, influence operates across a spectrum from legal lobbying to coordinated disinformation with often similar effects on public opinion. Together with Joanna Gocłowska-Bolek (University of Warsaw), we examine how the killing of cartel leader El Mencho triggered a wave of disinformation, amplifying fear and reshaping Mexico’s global image in real time. We then turn to the European perspective with Krzysztof Bulski (European Policy Innovation Council), who explains how influence works behind the scenes through lobbying, regulation, and access and where the line between legitimate influence and manipulation begins to blur. In a world driven by narratives, understanding influence is key to protecting democracy.
