Poland launched the $2.5 billion East Shield defense initiative on May 18, 2024, aiming to secure nearly 500 miles of border with Belarus and Kaliningrad. With minefields, anti-tank barriers, and advanced electronic warfare systems already in place, the project is moving rapidly toward completion by 2027.
In March 2025, Poland began producing hundreds of thousands of landmines after exiting the Ottawa Treaty. It’s also ramped up defense spending to 4.7% of GDP and ordered hundreds of modern weapons systems, including K2 tanks and FA-50 jets. Military training for all adult males is also underway as Poland prepares for any escalation.
