Zelenskyy–Orbán clash again over oil pipeline and €90B EU loan | Ukraine Brief

Russia’s continued strikes across Ukraine have killed at least seven people and wounded dozens more over the past day, damaging homes and infrastructure across several regions. On Thursday, 200 Ukrainian prisoners of war returned home in the first stage of a large exchange agreed during the latest peace talks in Geneva. Diplomatic tensions are escalating between Kyiv and Budapest after Hungary brought two dual-citizen Ukrainian soldiers from Russia without Ukraine’s consent, a move Kyiv condemned as unlawful and a potential Russian provocation. The dispute deepened amid a growing row over Russian oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline, prompting sharp exchanges between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s hopes for accelerated European Union membership suffered a setback after EU countries rebuffed a “reversed accession” proposal, undermining Kyiv’s “membership first, integration later” ambitions.
