BROOKLYN, Ohio (WJW) — At least one person is confirmed dead after a crash and police standoff that shut down ramps from Interstate 480 East and West to Tiedeman Road on Tuesday.

Ohio Department of Transportation cameras just before noon on Tuesday showed at least three crashed cars in the intersection, surrounded by police vehicles and officers.

Motorists at about noon on Tuesday were told to expect a delay of less than 10 minutes between mile markers 12 and 14, according to ODOT.

The I-480 East ramp to Tiedeman Road reopened later Tuesday, ODOT announced just before 4:30 p.m., while the westbound ramp remained closed.

The Brooklyn Police Department released a press release Tuesday evening, saying they were requested to assist the Parma Heights Police Department in the situation at 10:51 a.m.

According to the release, the Parma Heights PD was in pursuit of a Black F-150 pickup truck when it crashed at Tiedeman Rd. and I-480 with two other vehicles.

The driver of the F-150 was threatening to shoot himself and had a gun to his head, according to the release.

“He had a known history of threatening suicide by cop,” the release said.

The two other vehicles were evacuated from the scene, and three injured people were also taken for treatment during the standoff. The driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

“Numerous attempts by Brooklyn’s crisis negotiator to get the F-150’s driver to surrender peacefully were unsuccessful. The tactical unit of the Southwest Enforcement Bureau was called to take over the scene,” the release said.

After about four hours of the standoff, the man finally got out of his vehicle with a gun in his hand. He was then shot by a tactical officer at around 2:50 p.m., the release said.

It is unclear what condition the suspect is in at this time. FOX 8 News has requested more information, but has not yet heard back.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will investigate this officer-involved shooting.
