ALERT DAY: Severe storms, dangerous heat Wednesday

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – After two dry days of 100-degree heat in central North Carolina, strong and severe storms are expected on Wednesday, prompting a CBS 17 Weather Alert Day.

The hot, dry, high pressure that has dominated our weather so far this week will weaken some Wednesday allowing storms to pop up right over central North Carolina. The high heat and humidity will help strengthen the storms possibly making them severe leading to the Alert Day.

ALERT DAY: Severe storms, dangerous heat Wednesday

The Storm Prediction Center placed Raleigh in a level 2 severe risk. Areas near the Virginia state line remain at a level 1 severe risk on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The most likely timing for the storms Wednesday is from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Main threats from storms capable of becoming severe will be damaging winds over 60 mph and large hail. High heat and humidity will fuel these storms. Here’s a look at what radar could look like on Wednesday.

One benefit of the rain and storm chances will be relief from the heat. We’ll have isolated storm chances each day after Wednesday. There’s a level 1 severe risk for a part of central North Carolina on Thursday and Friday.

If you have outdoor plans, keep an eye on the sky during peak heating, well after 2 p.m., and be ready to bring them indoors just in case. The best way to beat the heat and storms is to get things done outside in the morning.
