WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The first heat wave of the summer is here and is causing chaos for Amtrak riders traveling to Washington, D.C. and New York City.
On Monday morning, about five Amtrak trains were canceled between the two cities after one of the rail partners’ equipment became disabled and blocked the tracks.
Amtrak then announced on social media just before 10 a.m. that passengers can continue to expect delays because of temperature-related speed restrictions. This comes as the heat wave settled across the region with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.
The delays specifically impacted trains traveling between Washington, D.C. (WAS) and New York (NYP), Philadelphia (PHL) and Harrisburg (HAR), NYP and Newark (NWK) and NYP and Albany (ALB). Amtrak said passengers will continue to experience a delay between noon and 8 p.m. on Monday, June 23.
“We will continue to monitor and provide updates as more information becomes available,” wrote Amtrak.
