CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — A child was shot in a vehicle along U.S. 1 in Cary early Monday evening, closing highway lanes with traffic backed up about a mile.
The incident was reported just after 6 p.m. along northbound U.S. 1 near Cary Parkway, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The Cary Police Department said the shooting happened on U.S. 1 northbound near the Cary Parkway exit ramp.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 5-year-old juvenile had been struck by a bullet while traveling in a vehicle,” Cary police said in the release.

The child was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The victim’s condition is currently unknown, police said.
“Due to the ongoing investigation, information is limited at this time,” police said.
Three northbound lanes are closed with traffic backed up to Tryon Road, NCDOT maps indicate.

A four-door black pickup truck is parked along the shoulder of U.S. 1 near the bridge for Cary Parkway. An ambulance was at the scene, according to NCDOT cameras. Cary police officers were also at the scene.
“Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling through the area or seek alternative routes,” Cary police said.
