Crews battle Derwood house fire in humid weather

DERWOOD, Md. (DC News Now) — Fire crews were at the scene of a fire in Montgomery County on a humid Sunday morning.

In a post on the X platform just before 7 a.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Spokesperson Pete Piringer said that crews were in the 8100 block of Pepper Ridge Way off of Washington Grove Lane in Derwood.

Piringer said that the fire seems to have started on the deck before extending into the attic of a single-family house.

The family was able to evacuate safely.

Piringer said that crews were working in a feels-like temperature of 80 degrees with 90% humidity.

In an update just before 7:15 a.m., Piringer said that most of the fire had been knocked down.

No injuries were reported, but one family of four was displaced.

Piringer said that the fire was likely related to an unused charcoal grill on the house’s porch.
