(FOX 5/KUSI) — The California Highway Patrol released more details Wednesday about a deadly crash in Chula Vista that snarled traffic on I-805 for 16 hours earlier this week.
The crash happened at 8:03 p.m. on Monday in the southbound lanes of I-805 near Telegraph Canyon Road.
The CHP said the driver of a red Tesla drove at a “high rate of speed” in the HOV lane and “intentionally drove into the rear” of a BMW motorcycle ridden by a 53-year-old man from Chula Vista. The man died at the scene.
After striking the motorcycle, the Tesla then struck a pickup truck that had six people inside, all of whom were taken to local hospitals.
After the crash, the Tesla ended up on its side, and its driver, a 22-year-old man from San Diego, fled on foot but was eventually caught by CHP officers.
He now faces several felony charges, including murder, the CHP said.
After the crash, at least three lanes of southbound traffic on I-805 remained closed through Tuesday morning as investigators documented the scene.
