New Raleigh Police Department report shows fewer homicides, assaults and car thefts

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A new report from the Raleigh Police Department shows it is cracking down on violent crime.

New numbers released from the department Thursday show a decline on crime rates during the second quarter of 2025.

“Honestly I have never felt like there was any high crime rate,” Tatyann Blak, a Raleigh resident said.

According to the report, in the second quarter of 2024:

  • Homicides: 7
  • Robbery (Total Incidents): 110
  • Aggravated Assault (Total Incidents): 293
  • Aggravated Assault (Firearm): 110
  • Aggravated Assault (Non-Fatal Shooting): 21
  • Motor Vehicle Theft: 536
  • Traffic Crash Fatalities: 11

In the second quarter of 2025, those numbers are:

  • Homicides: 6
  • Robbery (Total Incidents): 121
  • Aggravated Assault (Total Incidents): 286
  • Aggravated Assault (Firearm): 101
  • Aggravated Assault (Non-Fatal Shooting): 16
  • Motor Vehicle Theft: 426
  • Traffic Crash Fatalities: 11

The only increase in crime were robberies by 10%.

“It’s always reassuring when we see those numbers going down when we are continuing to grow as a community,” Lorrin Freeman, the Wake County District Attorney, said.

Out of the 6 homicides in Q2, the report indicates all of the cases have been closed as they involved the victims and suspects knowing each other.

The report also highlights that 35% of the total aggravated assaults involved a firearm, with 18% of those incidents resulting in a connected arrest.

Three juveniles have been charged for aggravated assault.

“I’ve tried to really prioritize those types of cases,” Freeman said. “We fast track a number of those cases so the can go to indictment and through the system as quickly as possible.”

Freeman applauded the police department for the work it has done to start programs to help reduce crime so there are not as many suspects to prosecute.

Programs include the Auto Theft Task force, the “9 p.m. routine” encouraging people to secure their properties each evening, the Hospitality District in downtown focusing on the nightlife areas and Cops on the Block.

In a statement to CBS17, Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce said:

“Our success is the result of strong collaboration, not only within the department but also with the community.”

The department plans to host events throughout the summer to encourage reducing crime. The events include several youth summer camps, Raleigh Hoops Nights and more.
