PERRYVILLE, Mo. – An investigation is underway after police say a worker was found dead, stuck inside an industrial oven, at a Missouri cereal plant on Thursday.
The Perryville Police Department reports that the worker was found dead at Gilster Marylee Cereal Plant, located in the 600 block of Old St. Marys Road in Perryville.
Police identified the victim as 38-year-old Nicolas Lopez Gomez.
Police responded to the cereal plant around 3 p.m. Thursday after reports that a man was “stuck in an industrial oven that was shut down,” according to a news release from the Perryville Police Department.
When officers arrived and were able to gain access to the victim, later identified as Gomez, he was found deceased, according to the news release.
Perryville police reports that Gomez was a Guatemalan national who was working under the alias of Edward Avila. The Perry County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity.
According to Perry County Coroner Meghan Ellis, “OSHA has been contacted concerning this accident and will be conducting its investigation. Our offices will work with them to determine how this occurred.”
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate circumstances around the death. Additional details in the investigation are limited at this time.
