Suspect in custody following armed standoff on I-35 in Liberty

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Clay County Sheriff’s deputies have both directions of Interstate 35 shut down in Liberty Friday afternoon following an armed standoff.

The sheriff’s office said the highway is closed from 69 Highway to 152 Highway at this time.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies tried to stop a driver who had a felony warrant just before 2:50 p.m. The suspect driver went south on 69 Highway then south onto I-35 where deputies were able to use a tire deflation device.

The suspect driver stopped briefly to let a passenger out on I-35 before taking off again and striking a second tire deflation device, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were able to stop the suspect vehicle using a PIT maneuver on I-35 near 291 Highway.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect was taken into custody shortly before 5 p.m. and is being taken by ambulance to a hospital for evaluation.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect is refusing to leave the vehicle and is armed. They have their Special Tactics and Response Team on scene to help.

I-35 remains closed at this time for the safety of other drivers.
