Parents, researchers and school staff are calling on the ACT government to reduce the speed limit in school zones to 30kph.
Dr James Thompson is a road safety expert based at the Centre for Automotive Safety Research.
He said reducing everyone’s speed was crucial, and that 30kph was the tipping point.
"If you’re a pedestrian … hit by a vehicle at 30 kilometres per hour or greater, you’re at a very high risk of being seriously or fatally injured."
"But if you’re hit under 30 kilometres, you have a pretty good chance of surviving."
