The Russian army is building concrete hangars for aircraft at military airfields in annexed Crimea. Krym.Realii investigated what weapons Ukraine can use to hit these shelters.
Russia has begun constructing shelters for aircraft at its military bases, including in annexed Crimea – this is evidenced by satellite images, writes the Russian Service of Radio Liberty .
Traces of shelter construction work can be seen on satellite images of Crimean airfields in Kirovsky, Gvardeysky and Saki, as well as in Sevastopol, OSINT analyst Def Mon reported on the social network X.
In Russia, similar work is being carried out in Yeisk, Krymsk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, at the Khanskaya airbase in Adygea, Millerovo, Akhtubinsk, Borisoglebsk, Kursk and Lipetsk, as well as at the strategic aviation base in Engels.
On June 9, the Krymskiy Veter Telegram channel published photos and videos of the construction of concrete hangars being built at the Saki airfield in Novofedorovka. The photo shows the construction process of a structure whose walls are made of monolithic concrete. The thickness of such walls is unknown. Another structure, the roof and walls of which are built from concrete modules, attracts attention in the video.
The publication also states that such construction has been underway at some Crimean airfields since December of last year.
The War Zone reported earlier , citing satellite images, that the Russian army was building protective structures for aircraft at the Belbek airbase near annexed Sevastopol . It was reported that ten shelters were at various stages of construction.
In addition to the reinforced individual aircraft shelters, satellite images also recorded the construction of less protected light shelters at Belbek. These structures are created using traditional frame structures and are located at group aircraft parking areas, where combat aircraft are usually prepared for takeoff and weapons are suspended.
It can be assumed that similar protective structures for airplanes and helicopters are being built at the Gvardeyskoye, Dzhankoy and Kirovskoye airfields using standard designs.
The report by OSINT analyst Def Mon does not indicate another Russian military airfield operating on the Crimean peninsula – this is the Kacha airfield, which is under the jurisdiction of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Ukrainian UAV strikes on airfields demonstrate the extreme vulnerability of aviation at bases, which prompted Russia to take measures to protect aircraft. However, Russia does not build concrete hangars at all airfields. For example, at the Marinovka airfield in the Volgograd region, which is located 300 km from the border with Ukraine, metal hangars have been built.
The Russian military believes that the development of such airfield hangars should ensure the protection of aircraft from the arrival of attack drones, as well as from the submunitions of the ATACMS ballistic missile, writes “Military” . The publication’s journalists note that the use of hangars will also prevent satellites and other optical detection equipment from knowing whether the hangar is empty or whether there is an aircraft there.
It should be noted that due to the lack of specialized stationary reinforced concrete shelters, Russian aviation continues to suffer losses from drone and missile strikes.
