Fire Guts Russian Military Electronics Plant in St Petersburg (Video)

(St Petersburg) – A serious fire broke out late on 28 May at the Avangard electronics facility in the Kalininsky District of St Petersburg, Russia. The plant, which plays a central role in the Russian defence industry, manufactures microelectronics and components used in military systems. Emergency services were called to the scene at 11:49 p.m. local time, and the fire was reported to have started on the fifth floor of the six-storey structure at 72 Kondratyevsky Avenue.

The blaze covered an area of roughly 100 square metres and required eleven firefighting units and forty one firefighters to bring it under control. The operation took around six hours. No casualties have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains unknown, according to Russian emergency services.

Russian media sources were quick to state that the fire was not the result of an airstrike. However, it came within hours of confirmed drone attacks on other key defence infrastructure. On the morning of 28 May, Ukrainian strike drones hit the Elma Technopark in Zelenograd, damaging at least one building. Another drone strike reportedly targeted the Kronshtadt plant in Dubna, which manufactures unmanned aerial vehicles for Russian forces. Local footage from the Moscow suburbs showed explosions and flames following those drone attacks.

JSC Avangard, the site of the St Petersburg fire, is a strategic enterprise listed among Russia’s most important defence companies. It is part of the Russian Federal Scientific and Production network, focused on radio electronics, microcircuitry, and structural components used in advanced military equipment. In 2014, the plant was further expanded with the creation of a Microsystems Technology Centre.

The timing of the fire, combined with the concurrent drone strikes elsewhere, has led to speculation that Ukrainian resistance efforts may be expanding to include critical infrastructure behind Russian lines, even if Russia denies any direct attacks on the Avangard site.
