Ukrainian Missile System Downs Russian Jet Drone Over Black Sea (Video)

(Odesa) – A cutting-edge mobile surface to air missile system developed by Ukrainian defence intelligence, with backing from foreign partners, successfully destroyed a new Russian jet-powered drone during an attempted night attack on Odesa region on 29 May 2025.

According to the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the advanced missile system, fitted with R-73 air-to-air missiles, was employed effectively against the incoming threat. The drone, likely a model referred to as the “Danj-M”, was intercepted and shot down over the Black Sea. Moments later, the wreckage of the destroyed drone was seen crashing into the waters below.

The operators of this mobile missile complex were trained by Ukrainian military intelligence experts, underscoring the country’s ability to innovate rapidly under the constant threat of aggression from the Russian dictatorship. The strike not only neutralised a sophisticated aerial threat but also demonstrated the precision and preparedness of Ukrainian defence forces.

While details about the cost of the drone have not been disclosed by Russian authorities, comparable jet-powered drones can cost in the region of 50 million rubles (approximately £440,000). Its destruction represents not only a tactical victory but also an expensive loss for Russia, whose air war against Ukraine has seen growing technological investment falter against Ukrainian ingenuity and international support.

Such achievements underline the strength of unity between Ukrainian forces and their Western partners.

The attack occurred as part of an ongoing wave of nightly drone and missile strikes against Ukraine’s southern territories.
