Russia launched one of its largest air strikes on Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least sixteen people – including a 12-year-old child – and injuring over 100 others across the country, Ukrainian authorities said. The air strike marked the worst attack on the country this year. Ukraine’s air force said air defenses shot down or disabled 667 out of 703 incoming targets overnight in the biggest attack in almost two weeks, including 636 Shahed-type drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles. “Over the past day and night, Russia carried out a massive terrorist attack against Ukraine with almost 700 drones, dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles. The attack primarily targeted civilians,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X Thursday. Major cities hit included Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipro. At least three people were killed, and 34 were injured, after a Russian strike on the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to the local authorities. The State Emergency Service reported that a fire broke out in several locations in the city of Dnipro, damaging buildings and vehicles. Apartment and private buildings, administrative buildings, an educational institution, and a boarding house for the elderly were also damaged. More than 200 firefighters and 55 units of State Emergency Service were sent to tackle the fire. At least 9 people were killed in the Ukrainian city of Odesa as Russia targeted several locations in the country in overnight strikes. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on Thursday that 16 others were also injured. Footage filmed by the service showed damage to buildings and residents being assisted by rescuers. The attack damaged residential buildings as well as civilian and critical infrastructure, including port facilities and railway freight cars, according to Ukrainian Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba. At least four people were killed, including a 12-year-old boy, after a Russian missile attack on a residential area of Kyiv overnight. 45 people were injured in the attack, according to Kyiv’s mayor Vitalii Klitschko. Rescuers pulled a child and a woman from the rubble of a residential building in the Podilsky district, Klitschko said. "On the third attack everything broke, everything flew, we were shocked, we didn’t know where to run, I grabbed whatever came to hand and ran away with the dog", said 54-year-old Tatyana Sokol, a resident of damaged building district. Russian forces had launched overnight strikes in other Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, Kuleba said. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X that Russia had used nearly 700 drones and dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles.
